As HR Professionals, we all know what a great tool Indeed.com can be for finding ideal candidates.  It is, therefore surprising to learn how few HR Professionals understand or use the power of Indeed.com in their own job search.

What makes Indeed.com such a great resource?

Indeed.com is a metasearch engine for job listings.  The site collects and displays job listings from thousands of websites, including job boards, newspapers, associations, and company career pages.  Job seekers do not apply for jobs through Indeed; they simply see job postings.  Applicants can then decide which jobs are of interest and then go to the corresponding sites to apply.  Simply stated, Indeed.com is a single source for thousands of job board postings.

How can I make Indeed.com work for me?

Whether you are one of the many out of work HR professionals or someone looking to make a career change, knowing which companies are hiring is half the battle.  Many of us simply do not have the time to spend hours online, reading newspapers, working our Social Media network… looking for potential job opportunities.  The simple beauty of Indeed.com is that each person has the ability to set up a free account and schedule automated “Job Alerts”.

These alerts can be customized in several ways, including Position, Key Words and Location.  The alerts are then sent to your email inbox at a frequency you specify.  Once you set up the “Job Alert” you are notified anytime there is a new job posting that meets your specified criteria.  You could wake up each morning and potentially have a list of several open positions waiting in your inbox.

 How do I get started?

To set up an Indeed account and “Job Alerts” is very easy.  You simply go to Indeed.com and in the upper right hand corner click the my.indeed link.  For those that need additional help in setting up their accounts and “Job Alerts,” Indeed has published how-to videos on the web (see links to how-to videos below).

How to set up Indeed.com “Job Alerts”

I have personally used “Job Alerts” and have seen the benefit of this tool.  Unlike many of the online or networking tools available to job seekers today, Indeed.com “Job Alerts” does not take much effort or time to set up and manage, but offers a potentially huge payoff.
