Stress is a natural reaction to external stimuli. It isn’t always bad, but unhealthy stress can become a major health concern. It is the leading cause of heart disease and can cause strokes or other long-term illnesses. And workplace stress is one of the biggest contributors to this for many Americans. Even if you love your job, you can experience stress while working. Here are some ideas to help you manage your stress and love your days at work.

1. Recognize Warning Signs

The best way to avoid stress is to know when and how it happens. Pay close attention to the signals your body gives you when under stress. When you know what to expect, you can take a step back when you feel the onset of stress. This gives you chance to step away, recharge, and approach the situation with a clear mind.

2. Focus on Health and Well-Being

Keeping your body and mind healthy is one of the best ways to reduce your overall stress levels. Eat well and exercise not just for the physical benefits but also to improve mental health. Some people have success with meditation or yoga to help with mental well-being, as well.

3. Learn to Prioritize

Stress creeps in when you feel overwhelmed. But this can be countered by using good organization and prioritizing tasks. Make sure your desk or office is neat, which will give you more peace and less panic. Keep important information in the right places. Use a To-Do list or day planner to help you prioritize tasks and know when you’ve completed something.

4. Manage Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to control your emotions and recognize the emotions of the people around you. Just like an IQ, this is a skill that can be improved with practice and learning. Begin by understanding your own reactions to others’ emotions and how those around you react to stressful situations.

5. Cut Out Bad Habits.

Bad habits only serve to increase stress. If something in your life is creating difficulty, reevaluate whether or not it’s necessary. You can start by replacing a bad habit with a better one. Instead of stress eating when you’re upset, step away and go for a walk. You can stop making bad decisions and replace them with healthy options.
